ELGIN, Ill. — A 52-year-old mother of three was found dead inside her Elgin home after authorities say she was the victim of a violent attack allegedly carried out by her former boyfriend.
Police responded to Charity Geisel’s home at approximately 10:43 a.m. on Aug. 30, where they discovered her body.
Investigators later identified Christian Flores, 54, as a suspect in the case. According to court documents, authorities believe the attack occurred the previous day, on Aug. 29.
Flores and Geisel had previously been in a relationship. Police have not publicly disclosed what led to the alleged confrontation or what may have happened between the former couple before the deadly incident.
Police Describe Brutal Assault
According to court documents, authorities allege that Flores attacked Geisel with a 20-pound dumbbell.
Police said the alleged assault did not stop there. Investigators claim Flores also choked Geisel and stabbed her several times in the throat with a large butcher knife.
The Kane County coroner determined that Geisel died from blunt and sharp force injuries, according to authorities. The nature of the injuries led investigators to describe the death as the result of a heinous assault.
Authorities believe the violence occurred inside Geisel’s home on Aug. 29, although the investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death remains ongoing.
Suspect Allegedly Fled Illinois After Killing
After Geisel was found dead, investigators began searching for Flores.
Authorities eventually located him in Indiana, where he was arrested on Sunday. Online jail records indicate that Flores was later extradited back to Illinois and booked into the Kane County Adult Justice Center.
He has since been formally charged with first-degree murder. Flores is currently being held without bond, and prosecutors are expected to argue that he should remain behind bars while the case moves through the court system.
A pretrial release hearing is scheduled for Sept. 11. The arrest brought an end to the immediate search for Flores, but the criminal case against him is only beginning.
Family Remembers Charity Geisel
As investigators worked to piece together what happened, Geisel’s family members began remembering the woman they knew as a mother and loved one. Her son, Matthew Geisel, and stepdaughter, Michelle Rice, have spoken about her following the killing.
Rice told that she considered Geisel much more than a stepmother. She described herself as the “luckiest person” to have had Geisel in her life and said she viewed her as a mother.
“I didn’t see her as anything else,” Rice said.
The comments offered a glimpse into the family relationship behind the criminal investigation, as loved ones now face the loss of a woman they considered an important part of their family.
Murder Motive Remains Unknown
Despite the arrest and murder charge, several questions remain unanswered.
Authorities have not released a possible motive for Geisel’s alleged killing. Investigators also have not publicly explained what may have triggered the confrontation between Flores and his former girlfriend.
Flores remains in custody as prosecutors prepare to pursue the case against him. Because the allegations are part of an ongoing criminal proceeding, they have not been established as facts in court.
The upcoming Sept. 11 pretrial release hearing is expected to provide another key development in the case.
