MONROE COUNTY, Fla. — What began as an investigation into trash dumped at a makeshift campsite in Monroe County ended with an arrest after deputies said thousands of pounds of debris had accumulated at the site.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Stephen James Dean, 42, was arrested Thursday and charged with illegal dumping.
According to deputies, the debris was found at a campsite near Mile Marker 98, where authorities said Dean had illegally dumped more than 3,000 pounds of material.
The discovery prompted deputies to give Dean an opportunity to address the situation before taking further action.
Deputies Gave Man Seven Days to Clean the Area
Authorities told Dean he had seven days to leave the campsite and clean up the debris, according to the sheriff’s office.
However, deputies said they returned to the location several times after giving him the deadline and found that the area had not been cleaned.
The continued presence of the debris ultimately led authorities to take the investigation further. When the cleanup was completed, officials said the amount of trash removed from the site totaled approximately 3,500 pounds.
The large volume of debris highlighted the extent of the alleged illegal dumping at the makeshift campsite.
3,500 Pounds of Trash Removed From Site
The cleanup effort removed thousands of pounds of material from the location near Mile Marker 98.
Authorities said the site remained uncleared despite the previous instructions given to Dean. The sheriff’s office then arrested Dean on the illegal dumping charge.
The case underscores the challenges authorities can face when debris is left at unauthorized campsites or other locations. Beyond the immediate cleanup, illegally dumped material can create additional concerns for surrounding areas and require significant effort to remove.
In this case, the final cleanup involved 3,500 pounds of trash, according to deputies.
More Charges Could Follow
Dean’s arrest may not be the end of the investigation. Deputies said additional charges or arrests are possible as authorities continue looking into the incident.
The sheriff’s office has not indicated what additional allegations could emerge, and the investigation remains ongoing. For now, Dean faces the illegal dumping charge stemming from the debris found at the Monroe County campsite.
The case is a reminder that authorities may give individuals an opportunity to correct an alleged violation before taking enforcement action. In this situation, deputies said the site remained uncleared despite multiple follow-up checks, ultimately leading to an arrest.
As the investigation continues, authorities could release additional information about the dumping activity and whether anyone else may have been involved.
