Sarasota Springs, Florida — A 19-year-old man has been arrested after an argument at a Sarasota County home allegedly escalated into a stabbing that left another man seriously injured and in need of emergency surgery.
The incident happened Saturday night at a residence in the 5100 block of Lahaina Drive, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were dispatched shortly after 11 p.m. following a report of a stabbing.
When deputies arrived, they found a Hispanic man outside the residence with stab wounds and significant blood loss.
Victim Lost Consciousness at Scene
Deputies began assessing the victim when he lost consciousness, prompting them to start CPR, according to the sheriff’s office. The man was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the victim suffered a stab wound to his left arm and also had several bruises that investigators said appeared consistent with being struck with a belt.
The victim had not regained consciousness when the affidavit was completed. However, deputies said he was expected to survive his injuries.
The investigation quickly focused on 19-year-old Yordi Lopez Fuentes, who authorities say was involved in the confrontation.
Argument Allegedly Started Over Girlfriend
According to a witness statement included in the affidavit, Lopez Fuentes and the victim began arguing after Lopez Fuentes allegedly acted disrespectfully toward his girlfriend.
The disagreement reportedly became physical when both men removed their belts and began hitting each other with them. The witness told investigators that Lopez Fuentes then became angry and began searching through drawers in the kitchen.
The victim reportedly asked him what he was doing. As the witness walked toward a bedroom, she heard Lopez Fuentes say he was going to kill the victim, according to the affidavit.
The witness then heard the victim telling her to call police. When she turned around, she allegedly saw the victim bleeding heavily while Lopez Fuentes was holding a knife.
The victim and witness then fled the residence, and the witness contacted law enforcement.
Deputies Used Pepper Balls and K-9
Authorities said Lopez Fuentes did not immediately comply with deputies’ commands to leave the home.
Deputies ultimately used less-lethal pepper ball munitions and a K-9 unit to apprehend him, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
Lopez Fuentes suffered several bruises during the encounter. Investigators said those injuries were also consistent with being struck by a belt.
He was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the K-9 apprehension before being transported to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office headquarters.
19-Year-Old Faces Attempted Murder Charge
Lopez Fuentes was arrested Sunday and charged with attempted second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing, according to the sheriff’s office and probable cause affidavit.
He was being held at the Sarasota County Correctional Facility on an ICE detainer. The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against Lopez Fuentes have not been proven in court.

Authorities also provided additional information about the suspect’s identity.
According to the sheriff’s office, Lopez Fuentes’ identity had not yet been confirmed through an official government identification document from either Guatemala or the United States.
His arrest record lists his citizenship as Guatemala.
The distinction is important because authorities had not yet independently verified his identity using an official government-issued document at the time of the report.
For now, the investigation centers on what happened inside the Sarasota Springs residence, where an argument reportedly escalated from a physical confrontation involving belts to an alleged knife attack.
The injured man remains at the center of the case as investigators work to establish the full sequence of events leading to the stabbing.
