SUMTER, S.C. — A South Carolina family is mourning the devastating loss of a young mother-to-be and her unborn baby after a freak accident at a go-kart track claimed both lives.
Baylee Johnson, 24, was 16 weeks pregnant with her first child when the accident happened at a go-karting track in Sumter.
She remained in critical condition for eight days before dying Monday. Her unborn son, whom she and her partner Justin Lowder had already named Johnny, also died, turning the accident into a heartbreaking double tragedy.
The circumstances surrounding Johnson’s death have left her loved ones struggling to process how an ordinary recreational activity could result in such a devastating outcome.
Hair Became Trapped in Go-Kart Mechanism
According to Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker, Johnson was driving a go-kart when her hair became caught in the sprocket of the vehicle.
The incident caused her neck to hyperextend, preventing her from breathing, Baker told. Johnson was taken for medical treatment following the accident, but her condition remained critical.
She ultimately died eight days after the incident. Her family later confirmed that her unborn baby also died.
The tragedy has drawn attention to the unexpected risks that can occur during recreational activities, while Johnson’s loved ones are now focused on remembering the woman she was and the mother she was preparing to become.
Family Reveals Pregnancy in Heartbreaking Announcement
One of the most painful aspects of the tragedy was how many people learned that Johnson was pregnant.
Lowder publicly announced the pregnancy while Johnson and their unborn baby were still in critical condition, hoping friends, relatives and others would pray for them.
“This isn’t how Baylee and I ever imagined sharing this news, but God has blessed us with a baby boy,” Lowder wrote on Facebook.
He revealed that Johnny was due February 21 and asked people to pray for both Baylee and their unborn son.
“Please pray for Baylee and our precious baby boy,” he wrote. “We love them both more than words could ever say.”
The announcement, made during an unimaginably difficult moment, became the family’s way of sharing the news about a baby they had already begun preparing to welcome.
Baylee Had Already Dreamed of Motherhood
Johnson’s family said she was thrilled about becoming a mother and had already developed a deep bond with her unborn child.
“She dreamed about him, talked about him, prayed for him and was already planning the life she wanted to give him,” her relatives said in an obituary.
“From the moment she learned he was there, Baylee was his mama, and Johnny was completely and unconditionally loved.” The family said they are taking comfort in knowing that Baylee and Johnny never had to say goodbye to one another.
That thought has become an important source of comfort as relatives cope with losing both mother and child before they ever had the opportunity to begin their life together.
Family Remembers Johnson as Beloved ‘Bay Bay’
Beyond the plans she had for motherhood, Johnson was also deeply loved as an aunt. Her relatives described being an aunt as one of the greatest joys in her life.
To her nieces and nephew, she was affectionately known as “Bay Bay.” Her family recalled the simple moments she shared with them, including coloring, laughing, being silly and spending time together.
Those everyday memories have now become especially meaningful for the children and relatives who knew her.
“She treasured coloring, laughing, being silly and simply spending time with them,” the family said.
Funeral Planned for Saturday
Johnson’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday, as family and friends prepare to gather and remember a young woman whose life ended far too soon.
For those closest to her, the tragedy is not simply about the circumstances of the accident. It is about the future Johnson had imagined, the baby boy she had already named and the family moments she would never get to experience.
At just 24 years old, Johnson had been preparing for one of the biggest chapters of her life.
Instead, her loved ones are now left holding onto memories of her caring heart, her relationship with her nieces and nephew, and the excitement she had for becoming Johnny’s mother.
