Lindenwold, New Jersey — Six high school students were injured after a teenage driver allegedly lost control of an SUV and slammed into a group of minors walking along a sidewalk near Lindenwold High School, with one victim becoming trapped underneath the vehicle.

The crash happened around 2:11 p.m. on E Gibbsboro Road, according to Lindenwold police. The students, who were between 14 and 16 years old, were walking near an apartment complex and grocery store when the silver Cadillac Escalade suddenly veered off the roadway.

The SUV jumped the curb and struck the group before continuing across the sidewalk, nearly hitting a utility pole and eventually crashing into a metal fence.

One Student Was Trapped Under the SUV

Surveillance footage obtained by NJ.com reportedly captured the moment the SUV struck the students.

At least one of the victims became trapped beneath the front of the vehicle following the crash and had to be taken to a hospital by air for treatment.

The other five students were transported to local hospitals. Their specific conditions were not immediately disclosed, but officials said all six victims were recovering and there were no reported fatalities.

The crash happened just down the road from Lindenwold High School, putting the incident close to a location where students and families regularly travel.

Bystander Rushed to Help Injured Students

Dennis Woodley, who works at a nearby grocery store, had just finished his shift when he heard the crash and immediately went toward the scene.

Woodley said he rushed outside after learning that high school students had been involved.

“Soon as I clocked out, I heard the crash happen so I ran immediately to the crash. Because they said it was high school kids,” Woodley told Fox29.

He said he quickly encountered an injured girl lying on the sidewalk.

“I seen the girl that was lying on the sidewalk. Her leg was pinned under the tire. After that, I heard a voice saying ‘Help,’ but it was a little faint and then I went outside of the fence and I seen a kid under the front bumper.”

Woodley said he and a co-worker helped prevent the teen driver from leaving the area while police were on their way.

Teen Driver Faces Multiple Charges

Police detained the teenage driver and an unidentified passenger at the scene.

According to police, charges have been filed against the teen driver, including one count of second-degree aggravated assault, six counts of third-degree aggravated assault and one count of joyriding.

The teen was subsequently remanded to the Camden County Juvenile Detention Center, police said.

Woodley claimed the driver attempted to leave the scene after the crash, but police have not confirmed that allegation. Woodley described how he intervened:

“I restrained him, I put him in a full Nelson, I said you’re under citizen’s arrest, and you’re not leaving until the police get here,” Woodley said.

The circumstances leading up to the SUV leaving the roadway remain under investigation.

School Community Responds After Crash

The serious incident prompted a response from Lindenwold school district Superintendent Kristin P. O’Neil, who referred to Tuesday’s crash as an “accident.”

In a message to the school district community, O’Neil expressed concern for the injured students and their families.

“Today, I hope we all hug our children a little longer and take a moment to share a kind thought, prayer, or expression of support for the children who are recovering and for the families, friends, and loved ones who are caring for them,” O’Neil wrote.

The crash has left the local community focused on the recovery of the six students as authorities continue investigating exactly what happened before the SUV jumped the curb.
