Knoxville, TN — A 23-year-old mother died after experiencing a medical emergency inside a Tennessee nightclub early Saturday morning, leaving her family grieving and searching for answers about what happened during the final moments of her life.

Kenya Burrough became unconscious inside Southbound Nightclub in Knoxville at around 2:20 a.m. on Sept. 5, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

Nightclub staff reportedly noticed that Burrough was having difficulty breathing and brought her outside. Her friends then told nearby officers that they believed she was having an asthma attack.

Burrough was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment but later died, police said.

Authorities have not yet determined exactly what caused her death. According to police, an autopsy had not been completed and the cause of death remained undetermined as the investigation continued.

Family remembers Kenya as a devoted mother

While investigators work to establish what happened, Burrough’s family is remembering her for the love she had for her young daughter.

Burrough was the mother of a 2-year-old girl named London. Her mother, Talya Zuo, told that Kenya was an exceptionally devoted parent.

“She was an excellent, excellent mother,” Zuo said. Zuo also described how strongly Burrough cared for her daughter.

“She would go to war for her daughter. It’s just absolutely amazing,” she said.

Before her death, Burrough had plans for her future. According to her mother, she intended to attend school to become a phlebotomist, hoping to build a better life for her daughter.

“She could make things better for her daughter,” Zuo said, describing the plans Kenya had been making before her death.

For her family, the sudden loss has been devastating. Zuo described losing her daughter as a “nightmare” and said she struggled to accept that Kenya was gone.

“I wouldn’t want to wish this nightmare on anyone. It’s been horrible. I keep thinking I’m going to wake up and it’s all been a bad dream,” she said.

Father says family is left with unanswered questions

Burrough’s father, Keith Burrough Jr., also shared an emotional tribute on social media several days after his daughter’s death.

“There are no words to truly explain what it feels like to lose your child. A piece of me left this world with her, and my heart has been shattered in ways I never imagined possible,” he wrote on Sept. 10.

He said the family was trying to understand how an evening that began normally ended in tragedy.

“Our family is left trying to understand how a night that started with laughter, friendship, pictures, and memories ended with us having to bury our child,” he wrote.

Burrough Jr. remembered his daughter as someone with a strong personality and a memorable smile, but said her most important role was being a mother.

“Kenya was a beautiful soul. She was loved by so many people. She had a beautiful smile, a strong personality, and a stubbornness just like me. But more than anything, Kenya was a mother,” he continued.

He also expressed concern about Kenya’s daughter growing up without her mother and said the family still has questions about what happened during the critical moments before her death.

Family asks public for information

As the investigation continues, Burrough Jr. has asked anyone who may have information about the incident to come forward.

The circumstances surrounding the medical emergency remain under investigation, and officials have not announced a final cause of death.

A GoFundMe fundraiser has also been established to help the grieving family. It had raised more than $4,000 as of Thursday, according to the fundraiser information.

The money is intended to help with funeral and memorial expenses, time away from work, family needs and support for Kenya’s young daughter as her relatives cope with the loss.

For those who knew Burrough, the tragedy has left behind a young child, grieving parents and a family still trying to understand how a night out ended with the death of a 23-year-old mother.
