Hickman, California — A 34-year-old excavation worker and former California soccer player was killed after a trench suddenly collapsed at a Central Valley worksite, leaving him trapped underground for hours as emergency crews launched a major rescue operation.
The victim was identified as Pablo Gomez, who had previously played goalkeeper for the Modesto City Football Club. Gomez died Friday after becoming trapped at the worksite in Hickman, a small community in Stanislaus County.
His death has prompted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
Former Goalkeeper Remembered by Soccer Club
Gomez had a connection to the local soccer community, having played goalkeeper for Modesto City Football Club in 2019 and 2020.
Following news of his death, the club publicly mourned its former player and offered condolences to his family.
The club said:
“This is a very sad day for the [Modesto City Football Club] family and the Modesto, California area,” the club said. “Our condolences go out to the family.”
For teammates and others who knew Gomez through soccer, the news added another painful dimension to an already devastating workplace tragedy.
His former club’s tribute reflected the impact his death had on people in the Modesto area, where he had been part of the local soccer community.
Rescue Effort Lasted for Hours
Gomez became trapped after the trench unexpectedly collapsed at the Hickman worksite.
Emergency crews spent hours working to rescue him, but the effort ultimately ended with the discovery that Gomez had died.
Trench collapses can become extremely dangerous because workers trapped underground may face rapidly changing conditions, including additional soil movement and limited access for rescuers.
The circumstances of Friday’s collapse remain under investigation, and officials have not yet released a complete account of what caused the trench to fail.
Family Remembers Gomez as Full of Life
A GoFundMe campaign established for Gomez’s family described him as someone who brought energy and happiness to the people around him.
The campaign called him:
“a very joyful, loved young man who loved to dance and loved to have a good time,”
It also said he was “always with a smile, brightening everyone’s day.”
The fundraising campaign described Gomez as a friend, son, brother, uncle, cousin and father, emphasizing the many family and personal relationships affected by his death.
His loved ones were left with what the campaign described as “a profound sadness that is hard to fathom.”
The description paints a picture of a man whose life extended far beyond his work and soccer career, with family and friends now dealing with the sudden loss.
California Workplace Officials Investigate
The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health is investigating the fatal incident.
The investigation is expected to examine the worksite, the trench itself and the circumstances that led to the collapse.

Officials will also look into whether workplace safety requirements were followed and what factors may have contributed to the deadly incident.
No final conclusions about the cause of the collapse have been established at this stage.
Another Trench Deaths Recently Hit California
The Hickman tragedy comes after another deadly trench collapse in California.
Two workers were killed in August after a trench collapsed at a construction site in Stockton, adding to concerns surrounding the dangers faced by workers involved in excavation and underground construction.
For Gomez’s family and the Modesto soccer community, however, the latest incident is deeply personal.
A worker went to a jobsite Friday and never returned home, while the local soccer community lost someone it remembered as a former teammate and goalkeeper.
As the investigation continues, Gomez’s family and friends are left mourning a man remembered for his smile, love of dancing, family and connection to soccer.
