Milwaukee, Wisconsin — A 36-year-old Wisconsin father of four has died after collapsing less than 600 feet from the finish line of his first-ever half marathon, leaving his family, fellow runners and the local racing community mourning his sudden death.

John Meise was participating in the half marathon at the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon on Sunday morning when he collapsed near the 13-mile mark, according to reports. A witness saw Meise fall shortly before 10 a.m., prompting emergency personnel to rush to his aid.

Meise Collapsed Just Short of Finish Line

A fellow runner told local media that they saw EMTs performing lifesaving measures on Meise near the 13-mile point, which was less than 600 feet from the race’s finish line.

Meise was placed on a stretcher and removed from the race route before being taken to Froedtert Hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office said Meise had no known medical history and that his cause of death remains undetermined.

The sudden medical emergency occurred during what was supposed to be a major personal milestone for the Wisconsin father.

First Half Marathon Was a Major Milestone

Meise had been an avid runner for approximately six years, but Sunday’s race was his first attempt at completing a half marathon. His wife, Lauren, told local media that running had become an important part of his life.

Meise leaves behind his wife and their four young children — Mason, 11, Owen, 8, Lucy, 4, and 1-year-old Isla.

His family is now facing the loss of a husband and father who relatives and friends described as deeply devoted to the people around him.

“His loss has left an enormous hole in the hearts of everyone who knew him, especially the family he loved more than anything,” his sister-in-law, Kristin Bennett, wrote on a fundraising page established to support the family.

Bennett said Meise had “a way of making people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for” and that his presence had made a difference in the lives of many people.

Family and Friends Remember a Devoted Father

Family friend Stacy Horneck also spoke about Meise’s role as a husband and father.

“He was literally the best Dad, and husband and best to everyone in his world,” Horneck told local media.

“He loved doing everything with his family. To say they’re heartbroken is an understatement. He was so funny, and intelligent and talented.”

Those close to Meise have established support efforts to help his wife and children as the family navigates the devastating loss. His death has also deeply affected people connected to the Milwaukee running community.

Meise Had a Career in Marketing

Outside of running and family life, Meise had built a career in communications and marketing.

He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and worked as a brand and digital marketing manager for QuadMed, according to his professional profile.

His career reflected another part of a life that family members described as full of energy, talent and commitment.

For those who knew him, Sunday’s race was not simply an athletic event. It became the final moments of a life remembered for his family, friendships, career and passion for running.

Race Organizers Respond After First Death in 44 Years

Race organizers expressed their condolences following Meise’s death.

A spokesperson said the organization extended its “sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the half marathon participant who passed away following Sunday’s event.”

“We are deeply saddened by this loss and are grateful to the medical personnel, first responders, volunteers and public safety partners who support the safety and well-being of participants throughout race weekend,” the spokesperson said.

The organization also said the event has established medical and emergency-response protocols, including medical support positioned along the course.

Participant safety, the spokesperson said, “remains a central priority.” Organizers noted that Meise’s death was the first death in the race’s 44-year history.

Thousands Took Part in Race Weekend

The Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon weekend drew a record-breaking turnout, with approximately 8,000 people registered across the weekend’s races.

About 6,000 runners participated on Sunday, making the event a major gathering for runners from across the region. For Meise’s family, however, the race will forever be remembered for a much more personal reason.

He was nearing the end of his first half marathon when he collapsed, just a short distance from achieving the finish he had spent months preparing to reach.
