Chicago, Illinois — A 32-year-old woman is facing a first-degree murder charge after prosecutors alleged she fatally stabbed a 50-year-old man during a confrontation on Chicago’s Far South Side, leaving a portion of the knife blade lodged in his skull.

Kelly Day is accused of killing Larry Young following a street argument on Wednesday. According to statements presented by prosecutors during a Saturday hearing at Central Bond Court, the confrontation occurred hours after Day allegedly experienced separate incidents in which people mocked her gender.

Authorities said Young was not among the individuals involved in those earlier incidents. Prosecutors alleged that a disagreement between Day and Young escalated into a deadly attack.

What Led to the Fatal Chicago Stabbing?

Assistant State Attorney Sara Grgurovic told the court that Day was with her partner and her 7-year-old stepson when the events unfolded.

According to the prosecution’s account, Day had reportedly been mocked by strangers earlier that day after using a women’s bathroom at a McDonald’s restaurant.

Hours later, Young allegedly approached Day on a street and made comments about her gender, prosecutors said. The exchange reportedly led to an argument, with Day becoming extremely angry.

Day’s partner allegedly attempted to pull her away from the confrontation. Prosecutors said Young then pushed Day before walking toward a nearby gas station across the street.

The prosecution alleged that Day told her wife she did not want “bullies” to escape accountability for making fun of her gender. She then allegedly followed Young across the street, where the confrontation resumed.

Surveillance Footage and the Alleged Knife Attack

Prosecutors described disturbing details of the incident during the court hearing.

According to their account, surveillance footage showed Day holding a knife above Young while he was on the ground. She allegedly stabbed him 13 times in the head, neck and upper shoulders.

The severity of the attack is a central element of the allegations presented in court.

Prosecutors also said Day called 911 after the stabbing, claiming she had been injured while defending herself from a “pervert.” She allegedly discarded the knife and left the scene.

Police later recovered the knife, but part of its blade was missing. The investigation subsequently focused on how the weapon was used and what happened during the confrontation.

Suspect Allegedly Gave Different Accounts to 911

Authorities told the court that Day provided a different explanation in a later emergency call.

According to the prosecution, she subsequently claimed she had cut herself while cooking. Investigators arrested her at a Chicago hospital, where she had sought treatment for a cut to her finger.

After her arrest, Day reportedly told investigators that Young had used an anti-gay slur, made a gun gesture and threatened to have someone beat her up.

These accounts form part of the reported circumstances surrounding the case. The allegations have not yet been tested at trial, and the prosecution’s account should be distinguished from evidence a court ultimately finds proven.

Autopsy Reveals Cause of Death

An autopsy determined that Young died from multiple sharp-force injuries, according to information presented by prosecutors and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The prosecution also told the court that the missing tip of the metal knife blade was later recovered from Young’s skull.

The discovery added to the evidence described during the proceedings as authorities outlined the alleged attack and the circumstances of Young’s death.

Officials have not established through a trial whether every allegation against Day is true.

First-Degree Murder Charge and Next Court Date

Day has been charged with first-degree murder and remains in custody pending trial. Prosecutors cited the alleged brutality of the attack among the reasons supporting her continued detention.

She is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday, according to the report. The case remains a criminal proceeding, and Day is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

As the proceedings continue, further hearings may provide additional information about the evidence, the defense’s response to the allegations and the next steps in the case.

The investigation and upcoming court appearances will determine how the allegations move forward through the criminal justice system.
