SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — A routine morning in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood turned into a terrifying emergency when a woman was viciously attacked by a dog on a city street.
San Francisco Fire Department crews responded to the 500 block of Larkin Street at around 9:20 a.m. on Sept. 8, after reports of the attack. The woman was left with injuries officials described as life-threatening and was eventually rushed to a hospital for treatment.
The attack reportedly involved a medium-to-large pit bull mix that was off leash. Witnesses said the dog had attempted to attack several people before or around the time it got hold of the woman.
The violent encounter prompted an immediate response from police and firefighters, with officers eventually having to restrain the animal before medical crews could safely treat the victim.
Police Use Catchpole to Stop Attack
When San Francisco police officers arrived, they found the dog still moving around the injured woman.
San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Robert Rueca told SFGATE that officers used a catchpole to restrain the animal and separate it from the woman.
The situation remained dangerous as officers worked to control the dog and get the victim out of further danger. Witness accounts shared through the Citizen app described an especially disturbing scene. According to those accounts, the dog was dragging the woman around before police were able to gain control of the animal.
A photograph from the scene showed police officers providing medical assistance to the injured woman while she was lying in the street.
The response allowed emergency medical personnel to take over and begin treating the victim for her injuries.
Woman Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries
Rueca told that the woman suffered “life-threatening” injuries in the attack.
Officials did not provide specific details about the nature or extent of those injuries. Fire officials said the woman was treated for traumatic injuries before paramedics transported her to a hospital.
The lack of additional medical information means it remains unclear how serious the woman’s condition was after she arrived at the hospital or what her recovery may look like.
The attack nevertheless prompted a major emergency response in the busy San Francisco neighborhood, with police and firefighters working together to secure the area and assist the victim.
Dog Dies While Being Restrained by Police
The incident took another unexpected turn after officers managed to restrain the dog. Police said the animal became unresponsive while it was being restrained and died at the scene.
