STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A routine delivery in Staten Island turned into a terrifying encounter Wednesday evening when a woman was allegedly attacked by a masked stranger who police say struck her with a gun before raping her.
The 37-year-old woman was making a delivery near Dongan Hills Avenue and Jefferson Street at around 6 p.m. when the attacker approached her, according to authorities and law enforcement sources.
Police said the man was a “total stranger” to the victim.
The encounter quickly escalated into a violent attack. According to authorities, the suspect hit the woman with a weapon and then sexually assaulted her before fleeing the area. The victim was later taken to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities said she was listed in stable condition.
It was not immediately clear whether the woman worked directly for a particular delivery company or was making the delivery independently.
Masked Suspect Flees After Brutal Attack
The suspect had already left the scene by the time police began investigating the incident. Authorities are now searching for the man, who remains at large.
The NYPD has released a sketch of the suspect in an effort to generate leads. In the image, the man is shown wearing a mask that covers part of his face, along with a hoodie pulled over his head.
The limited description makes identifying the suspect more challenging, and investigators are asking anyone who may have seen something unusual in the area around the time of the attack to come forward.
Police have not announced an arrest in connection with the case.
The investigation remains active as detectives work to determine the suspect’s identity and track his movements before and after the attack.
