WILLOW CREEK, Calif. — A search along a dangerous stretch of Northern California’s Trinity River ended in tragedy after authorities discovered the bodies of two brothers who died near Willow Creek in Humboldt County.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office dispatched deputies to Tagmeyer Beach at about 10:14 a.m. Wednesday after authorities received information about a man who had reportedly been seen struggling in the river’s current the previous day.
When deputies arrived, they found a vehicle still parked near the river’s edge, adding urgency to the search.
Authorities began an extensive operation covering both the river and the surrounding river bar as they worked to determine what had happened.
Two Bodies Recovered From the Water
During the search, deputies recovered two bodies from the Trinity River.
The victims were later identified as 45-year-old Arcata resident Lex Rincon and his 18-year-old brother, Krishna Rincon, who was from New York. Krishna was also known by the name Ganesh.
The discovery transformed what had initially been a search for a missing person into a heartbreaking family tragedy involving two brothers.
Officials have not indicated that foul play was suspected. Instead, authorities said the circumstances surrounding the deaths appear consistent with accidental drowning.
However, the investigation is not yet complete. Autopsies are expected to take place next week and are anticipated to provide additional information about the brothers’ deaths.
Family Preparing for Difficult Goodbyes
The tragedy has left the brothers’ loved ones facing the difficult task of traveling to Humboldt County.
Because most of the brothers’ family lives in New York, relatives are expected to make arrangements to travel to California following the deaths.
The family has also appealed to the community for financial support, noting that arranging travel on short notice can be extremely expensive.
“Last minute plane tickets are not cheap,” the family said in a statement, asking for help as they navigate their “extremely difficult time.”
The request comes as relatives attempt to cope with the sudden loss of two family members while also making arrangements for their final goodbyes.
Friends Remember Lex and Ganesh
Friends of the brothers have also spoken about the impact of their deaths. Lex’s friend Gregory Terry described him as someone whose personality left a lasting impression on the people around him.
“Our friend Lex was unrelentingly kind, determined, creative, and funny, and I am privileged to have known him for so long, and to have been introduced to his gentle and curious brother Ganesh.
“I am heartbroken by their deaths, as are all that knew and loved them,” Terry said.
The tribute highlighted the close bond between the brothers and the grief now being felt by those who knew them.
Autopsies Expected to Provide More Answers
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths, although officials currently believe accidental drowning is consistent with what happened.
The Trinity River can have powerful currents and dangerous conditions, making some sections difficult to navigate. In this case, deputies were initially responding to a report of someone struggling in the current before discovering the two victims.
The pending autopsies are expected to provide more information about the exact causes of death.
For the Rincon family, however, the tragedy has already brought an unimaginable loss. As relatives prepare to travel from New York to California, friends and community members are rallying around them during a painful period of mourning.
