PIKE COUNTY, Ky. — A routine welfare check at a Kentucky home reportedly turned into a disturbing child welfare investigation after authorities found three children living in what they described as extremely poor conditions.
Timothy MacDonald and Lana MacDonald were charged with second-degree criminal abuse, according to Pike County jail records. The couple was not listed as being detained at the Pike County Detention Center as of the latest available information.
The investigation began when an employee with the Department for Community Based Services accompanied state troopers to the home at around 5:30 p.m. for a welfare check, according to regional CBS affiliate WYMT.
When authorities arrived, they reportedly knocked on the door but received no response. Troopers could apparently hear small children and a dog inside the home.
Child Answers Door as Parents Remain Outside
An officer reportedly knocked on a window, after which a girl opened the front door slightly.
The child told authorities that her mother was working in her bedroom and that her father was not home, according to the local report. Around that time, Timothy MacDonald reportedly arrived at the property on an ATV.
Troopers allegedly discovered that Timothy had six active warrants in Pike County, while Lana had four active warrants, according to authorities.
Lana MacDonald then reportedly left the home but refused to allow troopers inside. Authorities said she told them that if she was going to jail, she was not letting them inside.
The situation eventually changed when Timothy reportedly instructed his oldest daughter to allow the troopers into the home.
Police Find Three Children Inside the Home
Once authorities entered, they reportedly found three children ages 16, 11 and 5 inside. Law enforcement said only one of the children was wearing a T-shirt when troopers arrived. The condition of the home reportedly raised even more concerns.
Authorities described the residence as being in horrible condition, with signs of severe neglect throughout the property. The most disturbing discovery reportedly came in the kitchen when troopers opened the refrigerator.
Refrigerator Reportedly Covered in Black Mold
According to authorities, the refrigerator was reportedly covered in black mold and filled with dead bugs. The discovery added to concerns about the conditions in which the children had allegedly been living.
At one point during the investigation, one of the parents reportedly acknowledged the condition of the home, saying, “I’m embarrassed, it’s bad.”
The statement came as authorities were attempting to assess the children’s safety and living environment. The welfare check ultimately resulted in both parents being arrested and the children being removed from the home.
Children Placed Into Protective Custody
Following the investigation, authorities placed the three children into protective custody. Timothy MacDonald and Lana MacDonald now face second-degree criminal abuse charges in connection with the case.
The allegations describe a home environment that authorities considered unsafe for the children, including the reported presence of black mold, dead insects and other unsanitary conditions.
The case remains a legal matter, and the charges against the couple are allegations unless proven in court.
Authorities have not publicly provided additional details about how long the children had reportedly been living in the conditions described during the welfare check or what further action may be taken regarding their custody.
The investigation highlights how a welfare check can quickly uncover serious concerns when authorities receive information about children’s well-being.
