SCOTT COUNTY, Mo. — A Missouri fire official is facing a murder charge after investigators say he allegedly shot his wife while they were driving on a highway and then told authorities that she had taken her own life.
Jeremy Perrien, 45, is charged with second-degree murder, felony harassment, domestic assault and two counts of tampering with physical evidence in connection with the death of his wife, 31-year-old Shelby Perrien.
Shelby, who was the mother of five, was found dead inside a vehicle on I-55 in Scott County during the early morning hours of June 29, 2025. The area is approximately 130 miles south of St. Louis.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Perrien initially insisted that his wife had died by suicide.
Husband Claimed Wife Shot Herself
Perrien told Missouri Highway Patrol troopers that he and Shelby had gone out for drinks at Hotshots bar in Cape Girardeau before getting back into their vehicle.
He claimed they were driving down the highway when his intoxicated wife said, “I’m sorry I’m a piece of s—” before pulling out a .380 handgun and shooting herself in the head.
Perrien said he continued driving for roughly a mile before stopping.
Investigators said he initially described their conversation as non-argumentative. However, he acknowledged that he had deleted text messages between himself and his wife, raising questions about what had happened before the shooting.
As investigators examined the evidence, they found information that prosecutors say contradicted his initial account.
Hidden Phone Video Shows Alleged Domestic Violence
Investigators recovered a video from a hidden folder on Shelby’s phone that had been recorded about a month before her death. The approximately 90-second video allegedly showed Perrien arguing with his wife inside their home.
According to the affidavit, Perrien removed his hat and struck Shelby several times with it.
“I would not get mouthy with me,” he allegedly said.
Investigators said he then made a series of violent threats, including allegedly saying he wanted to kill her and “smash her face.” The affidavit also alleges that Perrien choked Shelby with both hands and punched her in the ribs. At one point, he allegedly removed his wedding ring and threw it toward her.
“Take that motherf—r, I’m never wearing that son of a b— again,” he allegedly said.
Investigators said he subsequently punched her in the ribs again and threw her to the ground.
Text Messages Raised More Questions
Perrien eventually acknowledged that he and Shelby had argued on the night she died, but he denied being physically violent during that argument.
He told investigators the disagreement began after he wanted to leave the bar while Shelby wanted to remain there. He also said the couple participated in what he described as a “swingers” lifestyle and had gone to the bar to meet someone.
When investigators asked why he had deleted their messages, Perrien allegedly said, “quite frankly, I think I made her kill herself.”
He then reportedly added, “It’s an argument. It doesn’t take away from her actions.”
Detectives recovered some of the deleted messages. According to the affidavit, several contained threatening and abusive language.
In one alleged message, Perrien wrote, “You 100% will need a body bag if I stay with you. Each time my rage is worse.” Another message allegedly stated that he hoped Shelby would commit suicide and that he had encouraged her to take more.
Investigators said the messages provided additional evidence about the couple’s volatile relationship.
Investigators Say Evidence Points to Perrien
The investigation continued for more than a year before authorities reached their conclusion about what happened inside the vehicle.
According to investigators, blood evidence recovered from the car indicated that Perrien shot Shelby from the driver’s seat, contradicting his claim that she had shot herself.
Perrien was arrested Friday morning and remains at the Stoddard County Jail without bond. His next court date was not listed in the information provided.
The charges are allegations, and Perrien is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Sheriff Rejects Claims of Law Enforcement Cover-Up
Perrien had served as an assistant fire chief for Scott County and was also a reserve deputy with the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.
Those connections prompted questions about whether his position within local public safety agencies affected the investigation. Scott County Sheriff Derick Wheetley said that was not the case.
“We understand that people have been asking questions about this case for some time. We have also seen and heard accusations that the Scott County Sheriff’s Office was somehow covering for Mr. Perrien because of his association with law enforcement,” Wheetley wrote in a Facebook post. “I want to be absolutely clear: that was never the case.”
Wheetley said the sheriff’s office transferred the investigation to the Missouri Highway Patrol and Attorney General’s Office to avoid potential conflicts of interest.
“I worked alongside Jeremy at numerous fire scenes and calls for service,” the sheriff said. “This has never been something I took lightly, and I wanted the truth just as much as Shelby’s family, friends, and this community did.”
Shelby Remembered as Devoted Mother
Shelby’s obituary remembered her primarily for her dedication to her children. She was described as “above all, a devoted mother.”
“Her love for her children was both profound and fierce,” the obituary said. “She served as the cornerstone of her family.”
The investigation has now resulted in criminal charges against her husband, but the case will ultimately be decided in court as prosecutors present the evidence surrounding her death.
