MANTUA TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Amazon packages could soon be arriving from above for residents in parts of South Jersey, with the company preparing to launch a new drone delivery operation in Gloucester and Camden counties this fall.
According to local officials, Amazon plans to begin drone deliveries around mid-October, bringing a new type of delivery service to communities that have traditionally relied on delivery vans and other ground transportation.
Mantua Township officials recently participated in a Zoom meeting with Amazon representatives to discuss the proposed operation, according to Police Chief William Murphy.
Murphy later shared information about the planned deliveries with residents through social media, saying officials wanted the community to be aware of what was coming.
Where Amazon Drones Will Operate
Amazon’s proposed delivery area will cover nearly all of Mantua Township and the Borough of Wenonah, according to Murphy’s post.
The drones are expected to launch from an Amazon facility in West Deptford Township, meaning residents in the surrounding communities could begin seeing the aircraft in the skies as the program gets underway.
The move represents a significant change in how some local Amazon orders could reach customers.
Instead of a traditional delivery vehicle traveling neighborhood streets, eligible packages could be transported directly through the air by autonomous delivery drones.
For residents who have never experienced drone delivery in their neighborhoods, the upcoming launch could bring new questions about what the flights will look and sound like and how frequently drones may pass overhead.
Drone Flights Will Have Specific Operating Limits
Officials said the drone deliveries will operate within specific time and altitude restrictions. The flights are expected to be limited to a window beginning 15 minutes before sunrise and ending 15 minutes after sunset.
The drones are also authorized to fly at altitudes below 400 feet. Those restrictions are intended to define when and where the delivery aircraft can operate as Amazon begins the service in the area.
Murphy said the information was being shared with residents so they could prepare for the upcoming drone operation.
The announcement gives residents advance notice that drone flights could soon become a regular sight over portions of Mantua Township and Wenonah.
Mayor Says Township Has ‘No Say’ Over Deliveries
While some residents may welcome faster or more technologically advanced deliveries, others could have concerns about drones operating near their homes.
Mantua Township Mayor Bob Zimmerman addressed the issue in a social media post, making it clear that local officials do not control whether Amazon moves forward with the operation.

“Please understand that whether you are for or against deliveries of this kind by drones, we have no say over the matter,” Zimmerman said.
The comment highlights the limited role local officials have in determining whether the Amazon drone operation proceeds. Instead, township officials are primarily providing residents with information about the planned flights and what they can expect once deliveries begin.
