HOLIDAY, Fla. — A routine traffic stop in Pasco County turned into a brief pursuit early Sunday morning after a Florida Highway Patrol trooper said a 16-year-old driver sped away in her mother’s SUV.
According to an FHP arrest report, the incident happened around 6:36 a.m. on U.S. Highway 19 in Holiday.
The trooper was traveling southbound when he spotted a red GMC Acadia move into the center lane and begin accelerating. The vehicle was reportedly traveling 60 mph in a 45-mph zone.
The trooper initiated a traffic stop, and the GMC pulled into a nearby McDonald’s parking lot.
The driver was identified as a 16-year-old girl. During the traffic stop, she reportedly told the trooper that she did not have a driver’s license and only had a learner’s permit from what she described as “Maine or Massachusetts,” according to the arrest report.
Teen Gives Trooper Explanation for Driving
During the encounter, the teenager reportedly explained why she was behind the wheel.
According to the arrest report, she told the trooper that she was in a rush to get to a friend’s house to obtain medication for her brother, whom she said critically needed it.
The girl also told the trooper that her mother had given her permission to take the GMC Acadia. The trooper then returned to his patrol vehicle to enter the teenager’s information into the traffic stop call.
That was when the situation suddenly changed.
Teen Allegedly Flees Traffic Stop
While the trooper was in his patrol car, the 16-year-old allegedly drove away from the McDonald’s parking lot and headed onto westbound Camry Drive.
A brief pursuit followed as law enforcement attempted to stop the vehicle. The pursuit continued toward the intersection of Gulf Trace Boulevard, where the teenager reportedly lost control of the GMC.

The SUV crashed into a curb and a cable box, leaving the vehicle disabled. With the vehicle no longer able to continue, the teenager was ordered out of the GMC and detained by law enforcement.
The pursuit ended at the crash scene, without the teenager being able to get away from officers.
Mother Disputes Teen’s Claim
After the crash, Pasco County deputies went to the teenager’s home and spoke with her mother. The mother reportedly gave authorities a different account of how the teenager came to be driving the GMC.
According to the arrest report, the mother told deputies that she had not given her daughter permission to take the vehicle. She then permitted law enforcement to read her daughter her rights.
The conflicting accounts about whether the teenager had permission to use the vehicle became part of the investigation following the crash.
Teen Faces Multiple Charges
The 16-year-old was arrested on a charge of fleeing to elude law enforcement.
She was also cited for several traffic violations, including speeding, driving with a permit without a licensed driver age 21 or older present, and careless driving.
The incident remains a striking example of how quickly a traffic stop can escalate when a driver chooses to flee. Authorities have not indicated that anyone was seriously injured in the crash.
The arrest report details the teenager’s explanation for why she was driving and her mother’s subsequent statement, but the circumstances surrounding the claimed need for medication were not independently confirmed in the report.
