MAYS LANDING, N.J. — What allegedly began as a joy ride in a stolen luxury SUV turned into a deadly crash Saturday morning when four New Jersey teens fleeing police slammed into another vehicle, killing a beloved couple.
The teens allegedly stole a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon valued at roughly $220,000 in the early morning hours before taking police on a pursuit that stretched across several hours.
The chase ended shortly before 8 a.m. near Route 50 and Third Street in Mays Landing, where authorities say the SUV was traveling on the wrong side of the road when it crashed head-on into a Hyundai sedan.
The impact killed the two people inside the sedan, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
Couple Killed in Head-On Collision
The victims were identified as Robert Barr Jr., 54, and Alice Stilwell, 67, both from Egg Harbor Township.
According to a GoFundMe campaign created to help with funeral expenses, Stilwell was remembered as a beloved mother and grandmother, while Barr was described as her longtime partner.
Authorities said the force of the collision sent the Hyundai careening into a nearby gas station. The fatal crash transformed what had allegedly been an overnight vehicle theft into a tragedy that left two families mourning.
Meanwhile, the teens inside the stolen G-Wagon reportedly escaped the wreck largely unscathed.
Police Had Been Tracking the SUV for Hours
The stolen Mercedes had already drawn police attention well before the deadly collision.
Authorities said officers had been following the G-Wagon since approximately 3:40 a.m. in nearby Longport. The SUV reportedly sped past a local police officer who attempted to stop it.
Several hours later, officers in Hamilton Township spotted the same vehicle.
Police began pursuing the G-Wagon at around 7:45 a.m., according to prosecutors. Officers eventually lost sight of the vehicle only a few minutes before the crash occurred.
Investigators said the teens were allegedly speeding and driving on the wrong side of the road when they struck the Hyundai. The circumstances turned a lengthy police pursuit into a fatal morning crash.
Teens Allegedly Tried to Flee After Crash
After the collision, the teens allegedly attempted to flee the scene. Authorities quickly apprehended them, however, and four suspects were taken into custody.
Nayshaun Brown, 18, and three other teens who are minors were charged in connection with the incident, according to records. The charges include conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, joyriding and eluding police.
Because three of the suspects are minors, authorities have not released their names. It was not immediately clear which of the four teens was driving the G-Wagon when it crashed into the Hyundai.
Investigation Into Deadly Crash Continues
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the exact sequence of events leading to the collision and determine who was behind the wheel.
The charges against the suspects are allegations, and the case will proceed through the court system. Information about an attorney representing Brown or the three other teens was not immediately available.
For the families of Barr and Stilwell, however, the investigation comes after an unimaginable loss. A stolen luxury vehicle and an alleged attempt to evade police ultimately ended with two people losing their lives in a crash that authorities say could have been avoided.
The case also highlights the potentially devastating consequences of high-speed driving and attempts to evade law enforcement.
