NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A Friday night high school football outing turned into a devastating tragedy for one Nashville family after 16-year-old Cameron Frierson was shot and killed while leaving a game with his younger brother.
Frierson, a junior at Hunters Lane High School, had attended the football game at Pearl-Cohn High School with his brother, Chris. Later that night, gunfire erupted, leaving Cameron seriously wounded.
His younger brother was not injured, but he witnessed the shooting.
According to reports, witnesses told authorities that the shots came from a white sedan with tinted windows. Investigators are now working to identify the vehicle and determine who was responsible for the shooting.
The motive remains unclear, leaving Cameron’s family struggling to understand why the teenager was targeted.
Mother Says Her Son Was In the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time
Cameron’s mother, Brittany, believes her son may have been caught in a situation that had nothing to do with him. She said that the shooting was not connected to a dispute over a relationship or money.
“It wasn’t over a girl. This wasn’t over any money. This was strictly these kids looking to harm someone.”
Brittany said she believes the people involved may have mistaken Cameron and his brother for someone else.
“And they thought that someone that they were looking for were my children, and it wasn’t…”
She also expressed her grief and anger over the loss of her son.
“You don’t have a right to take no one’s life. You don’t get that right.”
Cameron was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, roughly two miles from where he was found. Despite efforts to save him, he later died from his injuries.
Family Remembers Cameron as Hardworking Teen
For Cameron’s family, the shooting has left a devastating void.
“My greatest fear in life has come true,” Brittany said while mourning her son.
She described Cameron as a teenager who was simply enjoying a typical Friday night before his life was suddenly cut short.
“Cameron was just doing what so many high school students do on a Friday night, enjoying a football game, and in an instant our lives changed forever.”
Brittany said her son had been a bright and hardworking teenager with plans and ambitions ahead of him.
She recalled that Cameron was working toward getting two jobs so he could buy his own clothes for the upcoming school year.
“That was the kind of child he was, determined, responsible, and willing to work hard for what he needed.”
The family says his death is especially painful because of how much life he still had ahead of him.
Reward for Information Rises to $20,000
As investigators continue searching for the person responsible, efforts to encourage information have intensified.
The Uvalde Foundation for Kids initially offered a $5,000 reward for information that could help authorities identify and bring the shooter to justice. The charity was founded following the 2022 shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
That reward increased significantly after Nashville native Clay Travis spoke publicly about the case.
Travis, who attended the same football game as Cameron, announced Monday that he would personally contribute another $15,000.
“There’s a $5,000 reward right now. I will make that a $20,000 reward. I will add $15,000 to anyone who is able to bring this killer to justice who killed this 16-year-old boy,” Travis said on X.
The increased reward is aimed at encouraging anyone with information about the shooting or the white sedan involved to come forward.
Cameron’s Father Pleads With Shooter to Surrender
As the investigation continues, Cameron’s father, who is also named Chris, made a direct appeal to the person responsible.
“Turn yourself in, we beg you to turn yourself in.”
Police have not publicly identified a suspect, and the motive behind the shooting has not been established.
Investigators are continuing to gather information from witnesses and work to determine exactly what happened after the football game.
For Cameron’s family, however, the search for answers is deeply personal. A teenager who went to watch a football game with his younger brother never made it home.
His loved ones are now left grieving a life they say was filled with promise, hard work and potential, while the community waits for the person responsible to be identified and held accountable.
