NEW YORK CITY — A series of shootings across New York City left at least one person dead and several others wounded Monday, with police and law enforcement sources reporting violence in Brooklyn and the Bronx over the course of the day and into the night.
The incidents came after several people were already shot near the route of the city’s West Indian Day Parade earlier Monday, adding to a day marked by multiple shooting investigations.
One of the most serious incidents occurred around 11 p.m. in the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx, where a 65-year-old woman was struck in the leg by what authorities believe may have been a stray bullet.
Police said two other people were also hit during the shooting near University Avenue and Merriam Avenue.
Three People Wounded in Bronx Shooting
The Bronx shooting left three victims hospitalized, according to authorities.
The 65-year-old woman was believed to be an innocent bystander and was struck in the leg. A 43-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the head, while a 52-year-old woman was grazed in the leg.
The man was listed in critical condition, while the two women were considered stable, authorities said. It was not immediately clear whether any of the three victims had been specifically targeted.
Law enforcement sources said the shooting may have stemmed from a drug-related dispute, although investigators had not publicly established a motive.
The circumstances remained under investigation as detectives worked to determine what led to the gunfire and whether the victims were connected to one another.
Brooklyn Shooting Leaves Man Dead
Earlier Monday evening, a separate shooting in Brooklyn turned deadly. At approximately 8:30 p.m., a group of people had gathered on Bristol Street near Livonia Avenue, close to Betsy Head Park in Brownsville, when a masked gunman reportedly opened fire.
A 32-year-old man, Cleo Daniels, was struck in the head. Daniels was taken to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries, police said.
The suspected shooter was reportedly wearing a black hoodie and a mask before fleeing toward the park. As of Tuesday, police had not apprehended the suspect.
Investigators had not determined a motive, and it was also unclear whether Daniels was the intended target.
Daniels had been released on parole from state prison in March 2023 after serving more than four years following an attempted murder conviction, according to state correction records.
More People Shot Near West Indian Day Parade Route
The overnight violence followed several shootings earlier Monday near the route of the city’s West Indian Day Parade.
Around 4 p.m., a 24-year-old man was shot in the buttocks on Nostrand Avenue near St. Johns Place in Crown Heights, according to police.
Authorities arrested 19-year-old Nayshawn Wilkinson in connection with that shooting. Police said Wilkinson was out on bail at the time after prosecutors had previously sought to have him held in connection with an alleged July shooting that wounded a 15-year-old boy in the foot.
Shortly afterward, another man and a 37-year-old woman wearing an orange-and-gold feathered outfit were shot at Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue, also along the parade route, according to sources.
All three victims from those incidents were reported to be in stable condition.
Police Continue Investigating Multiple Shootings
The string of shootings left investigators facing multiple separate cases across New York City. Authorities have not established that the incidents were connected, and motives remained unclear in several of the shootings.
The Brooklyn homicide investigation continued as detectives searched for the masked gunman who fled toward Betsy Head Park. Meanwhile, investigators in the Bronx were working to determine the circumstances behind the gunfire that injured three people, including a woman who may have been an unintended victim.
As detectives continue gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses, authorities are urging anyone with information about the shootings to come forward.
