NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. — A late-night Tesla crash in Midtown Manhattan ended with a 27-year-old passenger dead and the driver facing serious criminal charges, according to police and law-enforcement sources.

The crash happened early Wednesday when a 2024 Tesla allegedly driven by Alejandra Paharsingh went out of control in the busy Midtown area.

According to police, the vehicle first struck a mailbox before crashing into scaffolding on Madison Avenue near East 42nd Street at approximately 2:45 a.m. Instead of stopping there, the Tesla continued traveling for several blocks east along East 42nd Street.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop near the intersection of East 42nd Street and Second Avenue, where police responded to the crash.

Passenger Dies After Being Taken to Hospital

Paharsingh’s passenger, Elise Suomi, also 27 and from Harlem, was seriously injured in the crash. Emergency responders took Suomi to a nearby hospital, but she was later pronounced dead, police said.

The relationship between Paharsingh and Suomi was not immediately known. The crash left the Tesla heavily damaged. Pictures from the scene showed the wrecked vehicle at the intersection Wednesday morning, highlighting the force of the collision.

For Suomi’s loved ones, the overnight crash turned into a devastating loss, while investigators began working to determine exactly what happened during the moments leading up to the collision.

Driver Allegedly Under Influence of Alcohol

According to law-enforcement sources, Paharsingh was under the influence of alcohol when the deadly crash occurred.

Police said Paharsingh, who is from Connecticut, was hospitalized in stable condition following the collision. She was subsequently taken into police custody.

Authorities charged her with vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and driving while ability impaired.

The charges reflect the seriousness of the crash, which resulted in the death of the passenger inside the vehicle.

Paharsingh reportedly does not have a criminal record in New York City, according to the information provided by law enforcement.

Investigation Continues Into Fatal Collision

Investigators are continuing to piece together the events surrounding the crash, including the vehicle’s movements from Madison Avenue to East 42nd Street and eventually to Second Avenue.

One of the key allegations from law enforcement is that alcohol impairment played a role in the collision. The Tesla reportedly struck a mailbox before hitting scaffolding, then continued moving for several blocks before finally stopping.

Authorities have not publicly provided additional details about the exact circumstances that caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The investigation will also help establish the full sequence of events and circumstances surrounding Suomi’s death.

As authorities work to determine what led to the deadly crash, the case remains focused on the alleged impaired driving and the events that followed the collision.

The incident serves as another stark reminder of how quickly an overnight drive can turn into a devastating tragedy, particularly when impaired driving is suspected.
