Kailua, Hawaii — A 15-year-old golden retriever who struggled to move around earlier this year is making an inspiring comeback after his owner used her Pilates expertise to help him regain mobility. Now nearly 16, Weasel has become an unlikely fitness star, with videos of his rehabilitation exercises capturing attention online.
His owner, Jillian Loustaunau, runs Movmint Pilates in Kailua, O’ahu. She began sharing Weasel’s recovery journey in late September, showing how specialized exercises and fitness equipment became part of his daily routine.
The results have been encouraging, and Loustaunau says her beloved dog is regaining his abilities while rediscovering his playful personality.
Golden Retriever’s Mobility Declined Earlier This Year
Weasel’s rehabilitation journey began in May, when Loustaunau noticed that the senior dog was rapidly losing mobility, particularly in his hind legs.
The change was difficult for the family because Weasel had previously enjoyed an active life. Watching him struggle with movements he once managed easily prompted Loustaunau to seek professional veterinary help.
“Back in May, Weasel started to rapidly lose his mobility, especially in his hind legs,” the owner explained. “I took him to a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) who specializes in acupuncture and PT and noticed a lot of similarities with his rehab exercises and the movement I teach to humans every day.”
That observation inspired Loustaunau to explore how her professional background in Pilates might complement the rehabilitation guidance Weasel was receiving.
Rather than treating the situation as an ordinary fitness challenge, she focused on helping her aging companion work on strength, stability and movement.
How ‘Pawlates’ Became Part of Weasel’s Recovery
From May through September, Loustaunau worked with Weasel using specialized Pilates equipment and other fitness tools.
The routine included a reformer, Cadillac, Chair, CoreAlign and ladder barrel. Videos shared online show Weasel participating in different exercises, including movements on a reformer designed to provide support and stability.
Loustaunau described how the unusual rehabilitation routine developed in a social media post.
“I brought him to my studios and started him on the reformer, then the Cadillac, Chair, CoreAlign, and ladder barrel, and the rest is history!” she wrote on Instagram. “I’m still in awe of how much he enjoys using these machines and how much they are actually helping him.”
The videos show a gentle, carefully guided approach, with Weasel working through exercises alongside his owner.
His progress has also highlighted the importance of adapting activities to an individual animal’s needs, particularly when age and mobility problems make everyday movements more difficult.
Weasel Is Regaining His Functionality
In a video celebrating his improvement, Loustaunau shared an emotional update about how far her dog had come.
“What a transformation,” Loustaunau wrote on Instagram. “At almost 16, Weasel is the Pawlates King.”
According to his owner, Weasel has regained nearly all of his functionality through daily exercise and continues to make progress each week.
However, the physical improvements are only part of the story.
“Best of all, he has his personality back,” she shared in another Instagram video detailing their journey. “Going from such an active pup to barely being able to move was so hard on him. I am so grateful to have the resources and knowledge to give him his best quality of life.”
For Loustaunau, seeing Weasel regain some of his independence and enthusiasm has made the months of rehabilitation especially rewarding.
‘Pawlates 101’ Could Help Other Pet Owners
Weasel’s journey has now inspired Loustaunau to launch virtual “Pawlates 101” classes aimed at helping other dog owners whose pets are experiencing similar mobility challenges.
“I am fortunate to be able to dedicate time each day to helping Weasel heal and have created a virtual class to help other dog parents facing similar issues,” she shared on social media. “Pawlates 101 covers simple moves you can do at home to make a big difference in your pup’s wellbeing.”
The idea is to give pet owners accessible guidance on simple movements that may support their dogs’ well-being.
Still, exercises for aging or mobility-impaired dogs should be tailored to each animal. Owners should consult a veterinarian or qualified animal rehabilitation professional before trying new routines, particularly when a dog has weakness, pain or difficulty walking.
Weasel’s story offers a heartwarming reminder that aging pets can still find joy in new routines and that attentive care can make a meaningful difference in their daily lives.
