Las Vegas, Nevada — A confrontation over a cigarette outside a Las Vegas food bank ended in a fatal beating after a man stepped in to protect his girlfriend from two individuals who were allegedly insulting her. Now, one of the men involved is heading to prison after admitting his role in the deadly attack.

Shiloh Leutu was sentenced to three to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter in August, according to court records. The victim, Scott Dennis, died after being attacked outside the food bank while waiting in line with his girlfriend.

The case began with a seemingly minor request but escalated into violence that left one man dead and another facing a prison sentence.

Cigarette Request Sparked Confrontation Outside Food Bank

The incident occurred on July 9, when Dennis and his girlfriend were waiting in line at a Las Vegas food bank before it opened.

According to an arrest report, Leutu and another man approached Dennis’ girlfriend and asked whether she had a cigarette.

When she explained that she did not smoke, the two men allegedly began insulting and ridiculing her. Their behavior prompted Dennis to step away from the line and return to his girlfriend’s side.

Dennis had briefly stepped out to smoke but noticed what was happening when he saw the men confronting her. He then intervened in an apparent effort to protect her from further harassment.

What happened next turned the confrontation into a fatal act of violence.

Boyfriend Was Beaten as He Tried to Protect Her

Police reviewed witness statements and surveillance footage to establish how the confrontation unfolded outside the food bank.

According to a police press release issued in July, one man approached Dennis’ friend and began yelling at her. When Dennis intervened, the man struck him in the face, causing him to fall to the ground.

A second man then joined the attack.

“Detectives learned that the victim and a friend were in a line waiting for a business [the food bank] … to open,” the police statement said. “A male approached the friend and started yelling at her. The victim stepped in and the male struck him in the face causing him to fall to the ground. A second male jumped in and the two continued to beat the victim until the crowd could stop them.”

Investigators said the attackers continued striking and kicking Dennis while he was on the ground and attempting to get back up. The violence stopped only after people in the surrounding crowd intervened.

Leutu and the other man subsequently left the scene.

Surveillance Footage Contradicted Leutu’s Account

Leutu was tracked down by police and taken into custody on July 15, six days after the fatal incident.

Court records show he was initially charged with open murder and battery of an older person resulting in substantial bodily harm. However, the Clark County District Attorney’s Office later decided not to pursue the murder charge.

During questioning, Leutu allegedly told detectives that Dennis had placed him and the other suspect in headlocks after Dennis struck and kicked them.

Investigators, however, examined surveillance footage that indicated Leutu was the aggressor in the confrontation. Witness accounts and the video evidence helped police reconstruct the sequence of events leading to Dennis’ death.

The second individual involved in the beating was never arrested or charged, according to the available reporting.

Nevada Man Sentenced After Guilty Plea

Leutu’s guilty plea to voluntary manslaughter ultimately led to his sentence of three to eight years in prison.

The case highlights how quickly a verbal confrontation can escalate into deadly violence, particularly when multiple people become involved in a physical attack.

For Dennis’ girlfriend, the incident began with a simple response to a request for a cigarette. Her boyfriend’s decision to intervene when the men allegedly began insulting her ended with a fatal beating.

The sentencing brings a significant legal development in the case, although the available reporting does not indicate that the second alleged attacker has faced charges.
