LAKELAND, Fla. — A routine police response to an overnight crash turned into a desperate search through a dark and swampy Florida landscape after a man allegedly fled the scene with his two young children.
Authorities identified the man as Isaac Kinsey, 27, who allegedly crashed his vehicle through a road-closure sign and into a construction area during the early morning hours of Wednesday.
Instead of remaining at the crash scene, Kinsey allegedly left the vehicle and ran into a wooded area while carrying his 2-year-old child and 10-month-old baby, according to the Lakeland Police Department.
The situation became even more alarming when officers discovered two child safety seats inside the crashed vehicle. That discovery immediately raised concerns that young children were missing and prompted officers to begin searching the surrounding area.
Drone Footage Captures Terrifying Chase
Bodycam and drone footage released by police showed the search unfolding in difficult terrain.
In the aerial footage, Kinsey could reportedly be seen running through a wooded, swampy area in complete darkness while carrying the children.
The terrain made it difficult to move quickly. Kinsey appeared to stumble several times as he attempted to make his way through the area. The region is also known to be home to alligators, adding another potential danger to an already frightening situation.
During the repeated falls, the children were reportedly dropped into standing water. Police officers could be heard urgently directing Kinsey toward them as they worked to reach the children.
“Where are you? Come out this way, come out this way!” one officer yelled while shining a flashlight toward the area.
The officers continued navigating the dense marshland as they attempted to locate Kinsey and the children.
Officers Race to Rescue the Children
The search eventually brought officers close enough to intervene.
“Give me the baby! Give me the baby now!” an officer told Kinsey before reaching out and taking one of the crying children. Police were able to rescue both children from the swampy area and take them to safety.
The children were transported to a local hospital, where they were treated for injuries. Kinsey was also taken to a hospital for treatment, according to authorities.
The dramatic rescue was later highlighted by the Lakeland Police Department, which credited the rapid response of officers and the use of drone technology with helping locate the children in the difficult environment.
Suspect Allegedly Admits He Was Intoxicated
According to authorities, Kinsey allegedly told officers that he had been intoxicated when he crashed. Police also said he acknowledged that his driver’s license was suspended at the time of the crash.
Kinsey now faces multiple criminal charges stemming from the incident. Authorities said he has been charged with eight misdemeanor offenses and three felony offenses, including two counts of negligent child abuse with great bodily harm.
The allegations against Kinsey have not been proven in court, and the charges remain accusations unless established through legal proceedings.
Police Warn of Dangers of Impaired Driving
The Lakeland Police Department described the incident as one that could have ended with a far more tragic outcome.
“This incident could have ended with the loss of two innocent lives,” the department said in a statement.
Police credited the rapid deployment of drone technology, along with the persistence and teamwork of responding officers, for helping locate the children and get them the medical care they needed.
“There is no excuse for impaired driving,” the department added, while expressing gratitude that the children survived.
The incident remains a stark reminder of how quickly an impaired-driving crash can become even more dangerous when children are involved. For investigators and rescuers, the immediate priority was finding the two children before their situation in the swamp became even more dangerous.
Fortunately, officers were able to locate them and bring them to medical care.
