FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A disturbance inside a Fort Lauderdale hospital reportedly turned into a physical confrontation after a 51-year-old man allegedly challenged a responding police officer to fight and then resisted arrest.

Ronald Jeffery Johnson was arrested Saturday following the incident at Broward Health Medical Center, located at 1600 S. Andrews Ave., according to an arrest report from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

The situation began when hospital medical staff requested assistance from an officer who was working an off-duty security detail at the facility.

When the officer arrived in the waiting room, police said he found Johnson yelling at medical staff across the registration desk.

According to the arrest report, Johnson’s behavior was creating a disturbance and causing fear among other patients who were waiting inside the hospital.

Man Allegedly Challenges Officer to Fight

Police said officers intervened after witnessing Johnson’s behavior.

During the interaction, Johnson allegedly looked at one of the officers and said, “I want to fight you.”

Authorities said Johnson then charged toward the officer, turning what had been a hospital disturbance into a physical confrontation.

The officer attempted to take Johnson into custody, but police said Johnson grabbed the officer and resisted efforts to restrain him.

The confrontation eventually ended with the officer physically subduing Johnson and placing him under arrest.

“I physically subdued his intentional, aggressive and violent behavior towards me and he was taken into custody,” the officer wrote in the arrest report.

Officer Injured During Struggle

The confrontation reportedly resulted in an injury to the officer. According to police, the officer suffered a cut to his left hand that required multiple stitches.

Johnson also sustained facial injuries during the incident and was initially treated at the hospital before being transported to the Broward County Main Jail for booking.

The arrest report did not indicate that the incident began with any reported physical altercation between Johnson and medical staff. Instead, police said the initial issue involved his behavior toward hospital personnel and the disturbance he was allegedly causing in the waiting area.

The encounter escalated once officers attempted to intervene.

Johnson Faces Multiple Charges

Jail records show Johnson is facing several charges connected to the incident.

Those charges include aggravated battery on a first responder, resisting an officer with violence, assault on an officer, firefighter or emergency medical technician, and disorderly conduct.

Authorities also said Johnson had an outstanding Georgia arrest warrant connected to a terroristic threats case. Johnson remained in custody Wednesday at the Broward County Main Jail, according to jail records.

His bond was set at $8,500.

Georgia Arrest Adds to Case

Johnson’s history in Georgia is also part of the case.

According to a local news outlet in north Georgia, Johnson was arrested in 2023 on a terroristic threats charge after he was accused of threatening to beat someone with a boat paddle at a park in Cave Spring, Georgia.

Authorities said the alleged threat occurred in front of the victim’s 8-year-old child, resulting in an additional cruelty to children charge.

The earlier case is separate from the Fort Lauderdale hospital incident but provides additional background on the Georgia warrant mentioned by police.

Investigation Continues After Hospital Confrontation

The Fort Lauderdale arrest highlights how quickly a disturbance inside a medical facility can escalate when police are called to intervene.

What began with alleged yelling at hospital staff reportedly progressed into a confrontation with an officer, an attempted physical struggle and injuries requiring medical treatment.

Johnson now faces multiple charges in connection with the incident while remaining in custody on the $8,500 bond. The allegations remain accusations, and the charges will proceed through the court system.
