BROOKLYN, New York — A quiet morning walk along a busy Brooklyn street turned into a frightening ordeal for a 90-year-old woman after a stranger allegedly ran toward her and hurled a discarded baby crib filled with trash.
The incident happened around 9:45 a.m. Monday near Brighton Beach Avenue and Brighton 5th Street, according to the New York Police Department.
Security footage obtained by local media captured the shocking moment.
The woman was walking along the sidewalk when the man allegedly approached an area near a trash can, grabbed the discarded crib and threw it directly at her.
The impact knocked the elderly woman onto her side. Garbage scattered across the sidewalk as the suspect quickly ran away from the scene, leaving the woman on the ground.
Bystanders Rush to Help the Elderly Victim
The footage shows several pedestrians continuing along the busy block as the incident unfolded. At least two people stopped to help the woman after she was knocked down.
Their quick assistance came as the suspect disappeared from the area. The woman was subsequently taken to Coney Island Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
Although the attack did not leave the victim in critical condition, the incident has raised concerns because of the apparent randomness of the assault and the vulnerability of the woman involved.
Police are now trying to identify the person seen in the footage.
NYPD Releases Image of Suspect
The NYPD has not announced an arrest in connection with the attack.
Investigators released a still image of the suspected attacker in hopes that someone in the community will recognize him or provide information about where he went after the assault.
The suspect was reportedly wearing a blue hoodie when the attack occurred. Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or recognized the man to contact police.
The apparent lack of an obvious confrontation before the attack has added to the disturbing nature of the case.
Assaults Against Older New Yorkers Raise Concern
The Brooklyn attack comes amid broader concerns about assaults involving older New Yorkers.
According to NYPD data previously reported, assaults against New Yorkers over the age of 65 have increased by 14% compared with the previous year.
The department has also reported a much larger increase when current figures are compared with 2018, with assaults involving older residents reportedly up 143% over that period.
Police have additionally pointed to an increase in repeat offenders targeting elderly victims.
The NYPD has described a reported 50% increase in recidivist attackers targeting older people this year, referring to offenders who allegedly reoffend within 30 days.
Those figures have intensified concerns about the safety of older residents who may be more vulnerable when confronted by an aggressive attacker.
Police Ask Public to Help Identify Attacker
Investigators are continuing to work to determine what led to Monday’s assault and whether the suspect had any connection to the victim. At this point, authorities have not indicated that the woman knew the attacker.
The attack appears to have happened quickly, with the suspect grabbing the discarded item and using it to strike the woman before fleeing. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
