RICHMOND, Va. — Drivers arriving at a parking lot in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom neighborhood Tuesday were met with a shocking sight: row after row of vehicles with smashed windshields and broken windows.

Police say 33-year-old Tyler Holtrust allegedly went through the parking lot near East Grace and Ambler streets, close to Main Street Station, damaging dozens of vehicles with a brick.

Authorities ultimately identified 81 damaged vehicles, although early reports suggested the number could have been more than 90. The incident left vehicle owners facing unexpected repair bills and major disruptions to their day.

Richmond police officers responded shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday after receiving reports that a man was damaging vehicles in the area.

Officers located Holtrust and took him into custody without incident.

Witness Sees Arrest Before Discovering Damage

Sydney Lee, who witnessed the arrest, said she initially saw officers placing the suspect in handcuffs and getting him into an ambulance.

She then drove into the parking lot without realizing the extent of the damage. It was only after she parked that she noticed the vehicle in front of her had a missing windshield.

Then she looked around.

“I saw them putting him in cuffs and getting into the ambulance,” Lee said.

She described suddenly realizing that the damage extended throughout the parking lot.

“And then all of a sudden you could just see the whole line, just everything gone.”

The scale of the vandalism became clear as drivers inspected their vehicles and discovered that they could no longer safely drive home.

VCU Medical Center Employees Among Victims

The parking lot is frequently used by employees of the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, according to local reports.

Investigators are now working with VCU Police to identify vehicle owners whose cars were damaged. Flyers were reportedly left on affected vehicles to notify owners about the investigation.

For employees who had spent the day at work, the discovery created another problem: finding a way home. Laura Lee, a medical center employee who said she had parked in the lot for years, found her own vehicle among those damaged.

“It’s just a headache to have to deal with, but I’m just thankful that no one got hurt,” she said.

Her reaction reflected a sentiment shared by many victims: while the financial and logistical consequences were frustrating, no one was physically injured in the parking lot attack.

Drivers Question How So Many Cars Were Damaged

The sheer number of damaged vehicles has also left drivers wondering how the incident could continue without someone stopping it sooner. One victim questioned whether better surveillance could have helped prevent or quickly interrupt the vandalism.

“I wish that the surveillance here was a little bit better,” Lee said.

She added that the number of vehicles damaged made the incident difficult to understand.

“I think 100 vehicles is kind of a lot to get vandalized without anyone catching it.”

Drivers also expressed frustration over communication following the incident.

Some VCU employees said they did not learn about the vandalism until several hours after it happened, while others said they were never notified.

Suspect Faces Multiple Destruction Charges

Holtrust, who is reportedly homeless, was charged with one felony and eight misdemeanor counts of destruction of property in connection with the damaged vehicles.

Authorities said he could face additional charges as the investigation continues. Police are still working to determine the full scope of the damage and identify everyone whose vehicle was affected.

The case could therefore grow as investigators collect additional evidence and hear from more victims.

GoFundMe Created to Help Damaged Vehicle Owners

For many drivers, the arrest does not immediately solve the practical problem.

Replacing a smashed windshield or window can be expensive, and some victims said their insurance policies may not fully cover the damage.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help affected vehicle owners with repair and replacement costs. Police are also asking anyone who believes their vehicle was damaged in the area to report it.

Anyone with information or a damaged vehicle is asked to contact Richmond police Officer S. McNeil at 804-646-3602 or Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.

For drivers who arrived expecting an ordinary day at work, the discovery of 81 damaged vehicles turned a routine parking lot into an unexpected financial and logistical nightmare.
