NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. — A routine expedition into the Atlantic turned into an unforgettable wildlife encounter when two enormous whale sharks surfaced near a boat off the New York coast, giving passengers a rare look at the world’s largest known fish.
The remarkable sighting happened Monday aboard the Brooklyn-based American Princess, which had traveled roughly 100 miles offshore during a 24-hour pelagic trip.
One of the whale sharks came remarkably close to the vessel, swimming alongside the boat before disappearing beneath the clear blue water.
Video captured during the encounter shows the animal’s enormous, spotted back breaking the surface as dozens of people watched in excitement.
“It was nuts! There were a lot of birds feeding and then next thing you know this massive whale shark comes right up next to us in that crystal clear blue water,” said Chris St. Lawrence, a naturalist with American Princess Cruises who recorded the footage.
Rare Close Encounter Leaves Passengers Stunned
Although whale sharks are known to visit waters around the region, seeing one from a boat is considered an unusually rare experience.
St. Lawrence, who also works with whale research organization Gotham Whale, said whale sharks spend much of their lives beneath the ocean surface, making encounters from vessels particularly difficult.
“It’s pretty rare to see from a boat because they live their whole lives underneath the surface, so they can be hard to see and it’s so difficult to get out there,” he said.
The timing made the encounter even more memorable. St. Lawrence said he had been telling people throughout the trip that seeing a whale shark was one of the wildlife encounters he hoped would happen.
His wish came true when the massive animal approached the vessel’s port side.
The whale shark was estimated to weigh around 20 tons, underscoring just how extraordinary the encounter was for everyone aboard.
Hudson Canyon Provides Rich Wildlife Habitat
The sighting took place near Hudson Canyon, a massive underwater canyon connected to the Hudson River ecosystem.
The canyon extends for hundreds of miles and reaches depths of roughly 2.5 miles, creating an environment that supports an impressive variety of marine life.
Whale sharks are known to frequent the broader area, but their appearance at the surface remains difficult to predict.
During the same expedition, passengers and crew encountered an impressive collection of other wildlife, including whitetail tropic birds, a juvenile Sabine’s Gull, a leatherback sea turtle, a humpback whale and her calf, and yellowfin tuna.
Several of those sightings are themselves considered uncommon in New York waters.
Warm Gulf Stream Water Could Explain Sighting
St. Lawrence suggested that warmer water associated with the Gulf Stream could have helped bring the whale sharks and tropical bird species into the area.
However, he stressed that scientists still do not know enough about whale shark behavior to say exactly why the giant fish appeared so close to the New York metropolitan region.
Whale sharks are generally considered gentle animals despite their enormous size. They are filter feeders, consuming tiny organisms and plankton rather than hunting large prey.
Their appearance in these waters provides researchers with another opportunity to learn more about the species and the marine environment supporting them.
Endangered Whale Sharks Face Growing Threats
Despite their size and global distribution, whale sharks face serious conservation challenges.
The species was classified as endangered in 2016 and continues to face threats including vessel strikes, accidental capture as bycatch, fishing pressure, finning and climate change.
Researchers estimate that roughly 200,000 whale sharks remain worldwide, with populations still far from full recovery. Their slow growth and reproductive characteristics can make population recovery particularly difficult.
That makes sightings such as the one off New York especially significant to marine researchers and conservationists.
Hudson Canyon Could Receive Greater Protection
The federal government is also considering additional protections for Hudson Canyon.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is in the early stages of a proposal to designate Hudson Canyon as a National Marine Sanctuary.
Such a designation could help protect the area’s diverse marine ecosystem and the many species that rely on it. For those aboard the American Princess, however, the expedition will likely be remembered for a much more immediate reason.
