EDGARTOWN, Mass. — A routine day at one of Martha’s Vineyard’s popular beaches turned into an emergency Monday afternoon when a swimmer suffered an injury to her lower leg in what officials described as a possible shark attack.
The incident happened at South Beach in Edgartown, where emergency personnel were called after the woman was injured while in the water.
The swimmer, who officials said was in her late 20s, received initial medical treatment at the scene before being transported to a hospital for additional care.
Although officials have not confirmed that a shark was responsible, the nature of the injury immediately raised concerns about a possible encounter with a marine predator.
Town Administrator James Hagerty said in a statement that the wounds were considered consistent with a potential shark bite based on the injuries.
Woman’s Injuries Considered Non-Life-Threatening
Despite the frightening circumstances, officials said the woman’s injuries were not considered life-threatening. Hagerty said the injury involved the woman’s lower leg and did not result in the loss of a limb or other life-threatening trauma.
Multiple Edgartown agencies responded to the incident, providing medical assistance before the swimmer was taken to a hospital. The quick response from emergency personnel helped ensure that the woman received treatment shortly after the incident.
Officials have not released additional details about the woman’s condition following her arrival at the hospital.
South Beach Swimming Suspended as Precaution
Following the suspected shark encounter, officials temporarily halted swimming at South Beach.
The water restriction remained in place for several hours while personnel assessed conditions and worked to determine whether there was any continuing danger to beachgoers.
The precautionary closure was part of the town’s established response protocol following a potential shark encounter. Eventually, officials lifted the swimming restrictions, allowing beachgoers to return to the water.
Authorities emphasized that the temporary suspension was intended to provide time for officials to evaluate the area rather than confirm that a shark remained nearby.
No marine predator was observed or confirmed as being responsible for the incident.

While the swimmer’s injuries were considered consistent with a possible shark bite, officials stressed that no shark or other marine predator was confirmed to have been involved.

Shark Encounters Historically Rare Near Martha’s Vineyard
The incident has understandably renewed attention on shark activity around Martha’s Vineyard, although officials noted that confirmed shark attacks in the area have historically been rare.
Marine predators do pass through waters around the island, but the region has not experienced the same concentration of serious shark attacks seen in some other parts of Massachusetts.
Over the past two decades, nearly all serious or fatal shark attacks in Massachusetts have occurred along the coast of nearby Cape Cod.
Cape Cod has become a well-known area for great white shark activity because of its large population of gray seals, which are an important food source for the predators.
That does not mean every injury in the water is caused by a shark, however, and officials have not confirmed that a shark was involved in Monday’s Martha’s Vineyard incident.
Officials Urge Beachgoers to Stay Alert
The town thanked emergency personnel and beach staff for their prompt response following the incident.
Officials also reminded swimmers that ocean conditions can change quickly and that people should remain aware of their surroundings while in the water.
Beachgoers are being encouraged to follow lifeguard instructions and pay attention to any posted advisories. For now, the swimmer is receiving medical care, while authorities have not confirmed the exact cause of her injury.
