High Ridge, MO — A Christmas Eve confrontation between a Missouri father and his 26-year-old son ended in a fatal shooting, with a jury now finding 63-year-old Harold E. Luster guilty of killing his son in front of the victim’s fiancée.
Following a three-day trial, a Jefferson County jury convicted Luster of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the 2024 death of Kevin M. Ward, according to court records.
The case stemmed from a shooting at Luster’s home in the 6400 block of Highway PP in High Ridge on Dec. 24, 2024.
Police and emergency responders arrived at about 8:55 p.m. after a 911 caller reported that a man had been shot in the forehead. First responders found Ward dead at the scene with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
Ward’s fiancée told investigators that Luster was responsible for the shooting and identified the victim as Luster’s son.
Argument reportedly escalated over alleged affair
According to the victim’s fiancée, tensions had been building because Luster believed his wife was cheating on him and accused the couple of withholding information about the alleged affair.
The confrontation eventually became threatening, according to her account. She told investigators that Luster asked her, “Do you wanna get shot?” as the situation escalated.
Ward then reportedly told his fiancée to retrieve a knife from their truck. He also instructed her to run and call 911 if “something happened” involving his father.
The woman moved away from the immediate confrontation and took cover near the side of an outbuilding. From there, she remained close enough to see the interaction between the father and son. She said Luster eventually came out of the residence while Ward attempted to de-escalate the confrontation.
Surveillance video appeared to support witness account
Investigators also obtained surveillance footage from a residence located directly across the street.
The video appeared to corroborate portions of the fiancée’s account, according to court records. It showed a man believed to be Luster leaving the rear of the residence and making contact with Ward.

Moments later, the footage showed the man raising his arm. A muzzle flash appeared to be visible shortly afterward. Ward was fatally shot in the head.
The evidence became central to the prosecution’s case as jurors considered what happened during the final moments of the confrontation between the father and son.
Victim was expecting his first child
The killing was particularly devastating for Ward’s family because he was reportedly preparing to become a father himself. Ward’s mother told that her son was expecting his first child when he was killed.
The shooting therefore ended the life of a 26-year-old man just as he was preparing for a major new chapter with his fiancée and unborn child.
Luster has remained held without bond since his arrest, according to court records.
Father faces mandatory life sentence
With the jury’s guilty verdict now entered, Luster faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life behind bars. He is scheduled to appear before 23rd Judicial Circuit Judge Travis Partney for sentencing on Dec. 15.
According to the case information, Luster is subject to a mandatory sentence of life without parole. The conviction brings the criminal trial to a close, but the circumstances surrounding Ward’s death continue to leave a lasting impact on his family, particularly as they prepare to raise the child he never got the chance to meet.
