BOULEVARD, Calif. — A desperate escape from a rural California home led authorities to a disturbing child abuse investigation after a 7-year-old girl ran to a neighbor and begged to live with him, saying she had been beaten and abused.

The girl escaped in July 2025 from a mobile home in Boulevard, where prosecutors said she had been subjected to horrific treatment by her uncle, Devin Hughes, and his girlfriend, Kayla Reynolds.

According to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, the child reached the neighbor’s home while showing bruises, scars, burn marks and a black eye.

The neighbors immediately contacted authorities, giving the girl a chance to get away from the home where prosecutors said she had endured prolonged abuse.

When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found the child malnourished and visibly injured.

Uncle and Girlfriend Sentenced to 25 Years

Hughes, 39, and Reynolds, 32, were sentenced to 25 years in prison on Friday for their roles in abusing the girl.

The couple pleaded guilty in March to more than 10 felony counts, including torture, child abuse, corporal injury, mayhem and assault likely to cause great bodily injury.

Investigators said the girl’s injuries and statements pointed to repeated acts of violence and cruel treatment inside the home.

The child told investigators that Hughes had tied her hands behind her back with a zip tie before tripping her, causing the injury that left her with a black eye.

She also reportedly described other forms of punishment and abuse involving both Hughes and Reynolds.

Prosecutors Detail Horrific Conditions

According to prosecutors, the girl was allegedly starved and forced to drink dirty toilet water. She also told investigators that Hughes and Reynolds would cut her hair with a pocketknife and burn her with vape pens.

Prosecutors said the abuse extended into the child’s everyday activities, including bathroom use and sleeping arrangements. The DA’s office said she was allegedly forced to hold her urine until she wet herself and then made to clean it using her tongue.

She was also reportedly forced to sleep on the floor. In another disturbing allegation, prosecutors said the girl was chained to a treadmill using a cable lock.

Investigators later found items inside the home that allegedly supported parts of the girl’s account, including zip ties, cable locks and vape pens.

Hughes and Reynolds also had three other children living in the home, according to prosecutors.

Child Gains Weight During Hospital Treatment

After deputies intervened, the girl was taken to Rady Children’s Hospital for medical treatment.

Prosecutors said the child gained 5 pounds while receiving care at the hospital, highlighting the severity of the malnutrition authorities had discovered.

Following her treatment, she was placed with a family member. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office said the girl is now “thriving in her new environment.”

That outcome came after months of alleged abuse and a desperate decision by the child to seek help from someone outside the home.

DA Calls Abuse ‘Abhorrent and Heartbreaking’

San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan condemned the treatment of the child following the couple’s sentencing.

“The level of abuse inflicted on this 7-year-old child is abhorrent and heartbreaking,” Stephan said Friday.

She described Hughes and Reynolds’ alleged treatment of the girl as “sickening” and credited the law enforcement officers, prosecutors and medical professionals involved in the case.

Stephan said the prosecution team, sheriff’s deputies and detectives, along with medical staff at Rady Children’s Hospital, worked together to restore the child’s health and safety.

The girl now has an opportunity to move forward away from the environment where prosecutors said she experienced the abuse.

The case serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a child’s decision to seek help can change the course of a dangerous situation. In this case, the girl’s courage to run to a neighbor ultimately brought authorities into the picture.
