SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — An Ohio family’s months-long search for a missing 17-year-old girl came to a dramatic end when authorities found her alive inside the home of a former teacher who had previously faced allegations involving students.
The teenager had disappeared from the Huckleberry House crisis shelter in Columbus on December 2, 2025, according to the information provided in the report. For 263 days, her whereabouts remained a major concern for her family.
But family members say they had repeatedly directed investigators toward the home of Jobe Binkley, 48, a former science teacher with the Springfield City School District.
Chelsi Warner, the mother of the missing girl’s half-sister, told The Post that she believed Binkley had groomed the teenager after meeting her through the school approximately two years earlier.
Warner said the girl had previously run away and gone to Binkley’s home, raising further concerns among relatives.
“She’s had a troubled history with her mother and this groomer took advantage of a girl looking for a parental figure,” Warner said.
She described the situation as deeply disturbing, saying the teenager had become so influenced by Binkley that she allegedly did not recognize what had happened to her.
Family Repeatedly Pointed Police Toward Teacher
According to Warner, relatives had spent months telling authorities that the teenager could be inside Binkley’s home. The family says they even provided photos they believed showed the girl inside the house.
Warner said the family had photographs of the teenager inside the residence and had raised concerns about previous allegations involving Binkley. Despite those warnings, relatives say they were repeatedly told investigators did not yet have enough evidence.
“I’m very upset with this situation,” Warner said.
The family’s frustration intensified because they believed they had been providing information that could have helped locate the teenager much earlier.
The teen had also reportedly disappeared the previous November and was found several days later staying with Binkley, according to posts from family and friends cited in the report.
U.S. Marshals Find Girl Inside Home
The breakthrough finally came on August 21, when a special task force with the U.S. Marshals entered Binkley’s home. Authorities found the missing teenager alive inside the residence, bringing an end to the 263-day search.
Binkley was subsequently arrested and charged with one count of interference with custody, a first-degree misdemeanor. He pleaded not guilty and was later released on bond.
The prosecutor reportedly said that without cooperation from the teenager, authorities could not pursue a more serious charge based on the available evidence.
Binkley had previously denied police entry into his home twice during the investigation into the girl’s disappearance, according to the report.
Former Teacher Had Been Removed From School
Binkley’s history with the Springfield City School District has also come under scrutiny.
He was first placed on administrative leave in November 2024 and was placed on leave again in January 2025. The district then fired him the following month for violating its policy concerning the use of technology.
Warner accused the school district of attempting to avoid responsibility and said students had allegedly possessed video evidence of inappropriate behavior.
The school district, however, said previous allegations against Binkley had been unsubstantiated. Springfield City Schools also said it had never been made aware of allegations involving Binkley and the teenager who later went missing.
Those conflicting accounts have added another layer of questions surrounding the case.
Investigation Raises More Questions
The discovery of the teenager has answered the most urgent question—where she was—but significant questions remain about what happened during the months she was missing.
Binkley currently faces the misdemeanor custody-interference charge and has pleaded not guilty. Authorities have not indicated from the information provided whether additional charges will follow.
For the girl’s family, the discovery brings relief that she was found alive, but also anger over what they believe were missed opportunities to locate her sooner.
The circumstances surrounding her time at Binkley’s home and the allegations made by family members remain part of an ongoing investigation.
