JACKSON, Miss. — The investigation into the disturbing death of a young Mississippi mother took a major turn Friday when police arrested a 51-year-old man in connection with her death.
Jacques Ratliff was taken into custody by Jackson police as he walked along Capitol Street, according to authorities. The arrest came just one day after state medical examiners classified the death of 29-year-old Tasia Sidea Fortune as a homicide.
Police had executed search and arrest warrants earlier in the day as investigators continued working to determine what happened to Fortune.
Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney described the arrest as an important development but emphasized that investigators are not finished.
“That arrest today is an important development in this investigation, but it is not the conclusion,” Brackney told reporters.
The police chief also warned that additional arrests are pending as investigators continue examining the case.
Fortune Was Found Hanging Behind Abandoned Home
Fortune’s body was discovered on Aug. 3, hanging from a tree in the backyard of an abandoned home in Jackson.
The circumstances surrounding her death have raised significant questions for her family and the wider community, particularly after authorities determined that her death was a homicide rather than a suicide.
Brackney acknowledged the sensitivity surrounding the investigation and Mississippi’s history when discussing the case.
“We understand the questions, and the desire for answers, given Mississippi’s history,” Brackney said, adding that officials are approaching the investigation with a “global lens.”
For Fortune’s loved ones, the arrest brought an emotional moment after weeks of uncertainty. Her mother, Christy Spivey, broke down in tears when she learned that police had arrested a suspect.
“I just started crying and told them ‘thank you, thank you, thank you,’” Spivey told reporters.
Family Still Searching for Answers
Despite the arrest, Fortune’s family says major questions remain unanswered. Spivey said investigators have not told the family what the motive may have been. She also said she did not know Ratliff and was unaware of whether DNA evidence played a role in his arrest.
The family remains in disbelief and shock as investigators work to piece together what happened.
“We still don’t have a lot of answers,” Spivey said.
Spivey last saw her daughter on July 26 during a family reunion in Kentucky, shortly before Fortune returned to Mississippi. According to her mother, Fortune appeared to be doing well at the time.
“She was better than I had seen her in a long time. She was at peace,” Spivey told ABC News.
Fortune Remembered as Faithful and Talented
Fortune had lived in Jackson for about 10 years after moving there from Marion, Kentucky.
Relatives remembered her as religious, intelligent and athletic. Her obituary described her as “intelligent and talented,” noting that she had skipped her junior year of high school.
She was also a star cross-country athlete, according to her obituary.
Her faith remained an important part of her life, and her family described her as someone who maintained her belief in God despite the challenges she faced.
“She was also a star cross country athlete. But no matter what, she never lost her faith in God. She leaves a powerful legacy of resilience, rooted deeply in her unwavering faith,” her obituary said.
Investigation Draws Attention After Other Mississippi Hanging Deaths
Fortune’s death has also drawn attention because it came less than a year after two other hanging deaths in Mississippi.
Those cases involved 21-year-old Delta State University student Trey Reed and Cory Zukatis, a man in his 30s who was homeless. Authorities ultimately ruled both deaths suicides. Fortune’s case, however, has now been officially classified as a homicide, setting it apart from those previous investigations.
Police have not yet publicly disclosed all the evidence that led to Ratliff’s arrest or explained what investigators believe happened to Fortune.
