NEW YORK CITY — The beautiful weather that brought comfortable conditions to the New York City area over the weekend is quickly giving way to a much more unsettled pattern.
Sunday brought thick cloud cover and rising humidity, replacing the pleasant conditions seen Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to remain possible into the early hours of Monday, although the threat of severe weather during that period is relatively low.
A heavy downpour or two could still develop, but widespread severe weather is not expected Sunday night.
Temperatures will also remain fairly mild overnight, with lows mainly settling in the mid-to-upper 60s.
The bigger concern arrives later in the week, when increasing moisture and heat are expected to create a much more favorable environment for thunderstorms.
Monday Brings Brief Break Before Storms Return
The new week will begin with somewhat calmer conditions.
Monday is expected to feature a mix of sun and clouds, although residents cannot completely rule out a passing shower during the day.
Afternoon temperatures should reach the upper 70s to low 80s, keeping conditions relatively warm without the more intense storm threat expected afterward.
That break will be short-lived, however.
By Tuesday, the chance for showers and thunderstorms will increase substantially, beginning a stretch of potentially dangerous weather that could continue through Thursday.
Tuesday and Wednesday Could Be the Worst Days
The most concerning period of the week appears to be Tuesday and Wednesday, prompting meteorologists to issue First Alert Weather Days for both days.
During this period, strong to severe thunderstorms could develop at almost any time. That includes overnight hours, meaning residents should not assume they are out of danger simply because storms are not occurring during the afternoon.
Forecasters are keeping all major severe weather hazards on the table.
The potential threats include damaging winds, hail, flash flooding and tornadoes. While not every location will experience each hazard, the combination of high humidity, warmth and storm activity could produce locally dangerous conditions.

Because storms could occur at different times throughout the day and overnight, commuters, travelers and anyone with outdoor plans may need to keep an eye on updated forecasts.
Flash flooding could become especially concerning in areas that receive multiple rounds of heavy rain. Localized rainfall totals may rise well above the regional average if storms repeatedly track over the same locations.
For now, Tuesday and Wednesday appear to be the rockiest days of the week, with Thursday continuing to carry a significant storm threat.
Cooler Weather Arrives Before Labor Day Weekend
There is some relief in sight.
After several days of warmth, humidity and storm chances, cooler and drier conditions are expected to arrive Friday.
The timing could be welcome for residents planning Labor Day Weekend activities, providing a noticeable change from the muggy and unsettled weather earlier in the week.
Until then, however, New York City residents should prepare for a potentially active stretch of weather, particularly Tuesday and Wednesday.
